Nutrition Information

The beautiful leaves of the kale plant provide an earthy flavor and more nutritional value for fewer calories than almost any other food around. Exactly how kale’s sulfur-containing phytonutrients prevent cancer is not yet fully understood, but several researchers point to the ability of its glucosinolates and cysteine sulfoxides to activate detoxifying enzymes in the liver that help neutralize potentially carcinogenic substances. For example, scientists have found that sulforaphane, a potent glucosinolate phytonutrient found in kale and other Brassica vegetables, boosts the body’s detoxification enzymes, potentially by altering gene expression, thus helping to clear potentially carcinogenic substances more quickly. Sulforaphane, which is formed when cruciferous vegetables such as kale are chopped or chewed, triggers the liver to produce enzymes that detoxify cancer-causing chemicals, inhibits chemically-induced breast cancers in animal studies, and induces colon cancer cells to commit suicide. A study of Chinese women in Singapore, a city in which air pollution levels are often high putting stress on the detoxification capacity of residents’ lungs, found that in non-smokers, eating cruciferous vegetables lowered risk of lung cancer by 30%. In smokers, regular cruciferous vegetable consumption reduced lung cancer risk an amazing 69%! Human population as well as animal studies consistently show that diets high in cruciferous vegetables, such as kale, are associated with lower incidence of a variety of cancers, including lung, colon, breast and ovarian cancer. Now, research published in the International Journal of Cancer (Zhao H, Lin J) suggests that bladder cancer can join the list.

Nutrition Information:

Modern research conducted by Dr. Stephen Rennard, professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine, and his colleagues at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha suggests that there might be some scientific basis for the belief in the curative powers of chicken soup. They found that the particular blend of nutrients and vitamins in traditional chicken soup can slow the activity of certain white blood cells. This may have an anti-inflammatory effect that could hypothetically lead to temporary ease from symptoms of illness. Their research was published in 2000 in the scientific journal Chest.

Because it is simple to prepare, relatively cheap, nutritious, and easily digested, chicken soup is a good food for winter convalescents. Sipping warm soup can also clear the sinuses because of the steam ventilating into the nasal passages, serving as a natural decongestant, which also relieves cold and flu symptoms. Additionally, cold and flu viruses can only survive within a narrow temperature range, and sipping hot liquids can raise the ambient temperature in the nose and throat above this threshold.

When cooked (dry heat), sea bass provides 0.762 grams of omega-3 fatty acids, derived from EPA (0.206g) and DHA (0.556g), per 100 grams of sea bass.

What are Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), and why are they important?
Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids constitute the two families of EFAs.  EFAs are considered “essential” because they are needed throughout the human life cycle, cannot be manufactured in the human body, and therefore they must be obtained through our diet on a daily basis for optimal health and wellness.  The body must receive a constant and balanced supply of EFAs to ensure proper prostaglandin production.  Prostaglandins are beneficial hormone-like compounds that affect virtually every system in the body.  They regulate pain and swelling, help maintain proper blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and promote fluidity in nerve transmission.

What are early signs of EFA deficiency?
• Fatigue
• Poor memory
• Immune weakness
• Dry skin, eczema, or hair loss
• Heart problems
• Reproductive problems (men and women)
• Mood swings or depression
• Poor circulation

 Nutrition Information

Apples are high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and Thiamine.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is also known as Pyridoxine and is an amino acid. The benefit of vitamin B6 is that it changes fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into energy. B6 also helps to maintain the immune and nervous systems. It helps to fight heart disease. The vitamin also prevents the formation of homocysteine that lets cholesterol be deposited around the heart.

B6 can be found in meats, high protein foods, poultry, eggs, nuts and dairy products. Fruit and vegetables such as avocados, bananas, mangos, and potatoes all have B6.

Deficiencies of vitamin B6 can occur in some individuals. Signs of B6 deficiency include dermatitis, glossitis-sore tongue, depression, confusion, and convulsions. Alcoholics and older adults are more likely to be deficient. Alcohol promotes the loss of B6 from the body.

Benefits of vitamin B6 include treating seizures resulting from B6 deficiency, diabetes, heart disease, varicose veins, and premenstrual syndrome. B6 may also relieve symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, and it promotes healthy cardiovascular, and circulatory health.

What you really need to know about the flu shot

What you really need to know about the flu shot

As many of you know, I have been giving health talks in the community at various schools, businesses and Mommy and Me classes about protecting yourself from the flu using whole food nutrition. With the pressure to vaccinate growing stronger each day, it is important to be educated about the inherent dangers of the flu vaccination and the toxic substances it contains. In the end of the day, we need to be our own advocates, and arming ourselves with education in the face of pressure and hysteria will help us remain healthy and vital through the coming season.

Ingredients in the Flu Shot

Mercury (thimerosal)
One of the most poisonous substances known. Has an affinity for the brain, gut, liver, bone marrow and kidneys. Minute amounts can cause nerve damage. Symptoms of mercury toxicity are similar to those of autism.

Formaldehyde (formalin)
Major component of embalming fluid; poisonous if ingested. Probable carcinogen;suspected gastrointestinal, liver, immune system, nerve, reproductive system and respiratory poison. Linked to leukemia, and brain, colon, sinus, nasopharynx and lymphatic cancers.

Gentamicin Sulfate & Polymyxin b (antibiotics)
Allergic reactions can range from mild to life-threatening.*

Chicken embryos
The flu vaccine is made with fluids from chick embryos inoculated with specific type(s) of influenza virus. People who are allergic to these products (egg or chicken) or to any of the other ingredients in a vaccine can become seriously ill from the vaccination.

Sodium Phosphate
Symptoms may include vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, blood chemistry effects, heart disturbances and central nervous system effects. May cause inflammation and pain on prolonged contact, especially with moist skin.

Gelatin
Produced from selected pieces of calf and cattle skins, demineralized cattle bones and pork skin. Allergic reactions have been reported.*

Polysorbate 80
Known to cause cancer in animals.

Neomycin Sulfate (antibiotic)
Interferes with Vitamin B6 absorption. An error in the uptake of B6 can cause a rare form of epilepsy and mental retardation. Allergic reactions can be mild to life-threatening.*

Monosodium glutamate (msg/glutamate/glutamic acid)
Being studied for mutagenic, teratogenic (developmental malformation and monstrosities) and reproductive effects. A neurotoxin. Allergic reactions can range from mild to severe.*

Sodium Deoxycholate
Promotes tumors and damages DNA.

Octoxynol-10 (triton® x-100)/ octoxynol-9 (polyethylene glycol-p-isooctylphenyl ether; octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol)
Spermicide (kills sperm). Can cause chills confusion, dizziness, fever, lightheadedness, muscle aches, peeling of the skin. Causes severe eye irritation. Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or in contact with skin. Toxicology not fully investigated. May contain traces of ethylene oxide or dioxane, which are probable human carcinogens.
